Eltham area Community Hospital

The Victorian Government is investing $675 million to build ten community hospitals in major growth areas like Eltham.

These community hospitals will add real value to the way healthcare is delivered in suburban and regional Victoria, providing more access to in-demand services, closer to home.

The range of services offered at each hospital will be tailored for each community, with a strong focus on ensuring better integration of health and human services under one roof.

The Eltham area Community Hospital will be managed by Austin Health.

The community hospitals program will deliver the following benefits:

  • enable care to be provided locally, ensuring every family can get the care they need
  • assist in preventing poor health and wellbeing outcomes in communities with vulnerable or at-risk members
  • reduce unnecessary attendance and wait times at larger hospitals.

By coordinating investment with local organisations, the community hospitals program provides an opportunity to create thriving health precincts that will support the health and wellbeing of the local community, and bring greater vitality to growing areas.

What is a community hospital?

Community hospitals are a new type of facility being developed by the Victorian government to provide accessible health services in growing communities. They aim to provide a broad range of ambulatory hospital, community health and social care services within the one place, making it easier for families, patients, carers and clients to receive the services they need closer to their homes.

Community hospitals don’t provide emergency department care such as ongoing management of complex conditions including severe stomach pain, chest pain, trouble breathing or moderate trauma. These patients will continue to access their nearest hospital’s emergency department. Patients with these conditions who present at a community hospital will be stabilised and transferred to the most appropriate emergency department.

Planned services at Eltham

A community hospital in the Eltham area will give local families access to specialist services and an integrated care centre. The facility will provide a range of public services including:

  • pharmacy services
  • women’s health, including sexual health and family planning
  • social support services, such as housing assistance and financial aid

  • chronic disease management
  • community mental health assessments
  • alcohol and drug services
  • complex renal dialysis
  • day surgery
  • day chemotherapy
  • rehabilitation support
  • family safety and crisis support services.

A community consultative committee has been established for the Eltham area Community Hospital to provide a forum for members of the local community to participate in its planning and development through open dialogue and consultation.

The consultative committee includes:

  • foundation members from key organisations such as local councils, health service providers and Aboriginal representation
  • community members selected by an independent expression of interest process and a limited number of invited community members.

The committee selection approach considered a mix of age, gender and other demographic characteristics as well as a cross-section of interests and community perspectives to ensure diverse representation.

The committee is chaired by: Vicki Ward MP, Member for Eltham.

Committee members include:

  • Adam Horsburgh – Austin Health
  • Ronda Jacobs – Carrington Health

What is a community hospital?

Community hospitals are small public hospitals. They will provide a broad range of services including day surgery, walk-in healthcare services and social care services, in the one place. This will make it easier for people to receive the services they need, closer to home.

Community hospitals will be governed and operated by major Victorian health services. Community health services will have the opportunity to partner with community hospitals to deliver care locally.

Where will the new Eltham area Community Hospital be located?

The Eltham area Community Hospital will be a new development, built on a greenfield site.

We are still in the early planning stages for community hospitals and are currently working closely with key stakeholders to find the best possible site for the Eltham area Community Hospital.

What services will the Eltham area Community Hospital provide?

Services will include early intervention, primary and community care, as well as a focus on paediatric care, chronic disease management programs, and day hospital services – all aimed at managing health needs locally. There is a strong focus on ensuring services come together, to connect a range of health and human services under one roof.

How can I have my say on the planning for the Eltham area Community Hospital?

The range of services that will be provided at the community hospital will be driven by the health and wellbeing needs of the local community. Therefore, it is vital that the community actively participate in the planning process.

We have established a community consultative committee to provide a forum for members of the community to have their say on the planning and development of the Eltham area Community Hospital.

To speak to the Eltham area community consultative committee, please email the Chair, Vicki Ward MP, Member for Eltham, at Vicki.Ward@parliament.vic.gov.au.

What is a community consultative committee?

Community consultative committees are a forum for discussion between government, locals and other stakeholders on a particular project. They provide a space where people can share their ideas, feedback and concerns on a project, and where they can be kept up-to-date with how the project is going.

Where can I find further information, make enquiries or provide feedback?

Further information can be found on the Community Hospitals program page.
