Angliss Hospital new intensive care unit and short stay unit

Location 39 Albert Street , Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, 3156, Australia

The $20 million Angliss Hospital new intensive care unit and short stay unit project was completed in October 2018. The expansion aimed to improve health care services in Melbourne’s outer east.

The project has delivered a new intensive care unit located on a new fourth level, as well as a second short stay unit within the emergency department, providing care for patients who require stays of up to 24 hours.

The Angliss Hospital new intensive care unit and short stay unit project was delivered in two stages.

Stage 1 construction of a new intensive care unit and executive administration office on Level 4 delivered:

  • 14 intensive care beds
  • a new executive administration office suite
  • construction of a new lift shaft incorporating two new lifts and link way into the existing courtyard
  • new infrastructure, including new main switchboard.

Stage 2 included the refurbishment of the existing Level 2 south block into a short stay unit (adult and paediatric beds) and delivered:

  • two mental health beds
  • eight paediatric beds (four short stay and four emergency)
  • 16 adult acute short stay beds.

The Angliss Hospital new intensive care unit and short stay unit project aimed to achieve the following benefits:

Meet growing demand

The development was designed to increase and improve the hospital’s ability to provide critical health care to the community. This can support the hospital to meet the growing and changing needs in the area.

Local emergency care

The short stay unit can help to reduce waiting times in the hospital’s emergency department, so local patients can get the treatment and care they need.

This project is being delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with:

  • Eastern Health
  • Silver Thomas Hanley (architect)
  • Kane Constructions (builder).
