Northern Hospital expansion - Stage 2

Location 185 Cooper St, Epping, Victoria, 3076, Australia

The Victorian Government has committed $162.7 million to the Northern Hospital expansion project.

The project is a major rebuilding and refurbishment of the Northern Hospital in Epping. The expansion includes three new operating theatres, including one hybrid theatre. It also includes three new 32-bed wards for 96 acute in-patient beds.

The Northern Hospital operates one of the state’s busiest emergency departments. It treats more than 100,000 patients each year. Each week, staff perform 120 emergency surgeries and receive 450 ambulance arrivals. Melbourne’s north is growing – fast. The population in this region is expected to double by 2031. As the population increases, so will the demand for quality health care. The Northern Hospital Expansion project aims to support communities of Melbourne’s north with quality healthcare – now, and into the future.

Stage 1, completed in June 2016, saw the development of a three-storey tower and 32-bed inpatient unit, connected to the main hospital via an aerial link.

Stage 2, which is now being constructed will increase the tower from three to seven floors. This will provide space for improved facilities and extra room to meet future needs.

The expansion will include:

  • three 32-bed wards accommodating 96 acute in-patient beds
  • three new operating theatres including one hybrid theatre
  • new theatre recovery spaces
  • expansion of cardiology services
  • a fitted-out ground floor with kitchen, café hub, offices, transit lounge, emergency control room, morgue and communications rooms
  • new electrical and lift infrastructure
  • future provision for a helipad
  • a new central sterile supply unit
  • equipment loan centre
  • bio-medical engineering
  • loading dock and other back office functions.

The Northern Hospital expansion – stage 2 aims to achieve the following benefits:

Better access to services

The expansion will improve access for patients by redesigning existing services and adding new ones.

Fewer ambulance bypasses

More state-of-the-art facilities and services will reduce the number of ambulance bypasses to other hospitals. This means that patients can be treated faster, and close to home.

Ready for future expansions

The expansion will also include additional floor space for future bed expansion.

This project is being delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with:
