Latrobe Regional Hospital - Stage 2

Location 10 Village Ave , Traralgon West, Victoria, 3844, Australia

The $73 million Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 2 expansion was completed in August 2017.

The project was designed to improve access to efficient, high quality healthcare services that the Gippsland community can access close to home. It also aimed to encourage health care professionals to live and work in the region.

The expansion included 30 new acute inpatient beds, 12 new short stay beds, a new emergency department and Gippsland’s first cardiac catheterisation laboratory.

A third stage to the expansion was announced in December 2019. The $217 million Stage 3A expansion will include 44 new inpatient beds and three new operating theatres. It is expected to create 600 construction jobs and is due to be completed in 2023.

The Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 2 expansion was part of the multi-stage Latrobe Regional Hospital masterplan and delivered:

a new emergency department with satellite imaging including X-ray, CT scan and ultrasound

  • 30-bed acute inpatient ward
  • 12-bed short stay unit
  • two endoscopy rooms
  • new cardiac catheterisation laboratory
  • new main entrance and drop-off area connected to public transport and public car parking
  • refurbished and extended central plant area
  • new ambulance bay for four vehicles.

Stage 2 of the expansion also delivered new staff car parking to the north‐west of the hospital, plus a new rear service road.

Completed in 2014, Stage 1 of the Latrobe Regional Hospital expansion delivered:

  • an expanded regional cancer centre
  • four new sub‐acute beds
  • four additional secure mental health beds an extended rehabilitation community centre
  • a mother and baby unit
  • improved education space and accommodation for Monash University medical students

The $217 million Stage 3A expansion was announced in 2019.

The Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 2 expansion aimed to provide the following benefits:

Gippsland’s first cardiac catheterisation laboratory

The Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 2 expansion has delivered the first cardiac catheterisation laboratory for Gippsland. The new cath lab will provide lifesaving treatment for people experiencing heart disease. Instead of being transferred to Melbourne, Gippsland residents can now receive cardiac treatment in Gippsland.

More health services

Latrobe Regional Hospital is Gippsland’s base for orthopaedic, medical oncology, radiology and pathology services. This expansion increases the hospital’s capacity to provide more health services to the region. This includes complex medical and surgical services with access to a network of visiting Melbourne-based specialists.

Treating more patients, closer to home

The expansion provides an additional 30 acute inpatient beds and 12 short stay beds and increases the hospital’s emergency department capacity. This means more patients can be treated and cared for closer to home. That means more people in Gippsland can access the specialist care they need and minimises pressure on hospitals in Melbourne.

Building a regional health workforce

Investment in expanding Latrobe Regional Hospital will also help attract health professionals to the area. Attracting more doctors and nurses to the area helps to develop a rural and regional health workforce.

Local economy

The Latrobe Regional Hospital Stage 2 expansion created 600 jobs whilst the project was in construction.

This project was delivered by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with:

  • Latrobe Regional Hospital
  • Cockram Construction (builder).
