The Victorian Government is investing $115 million in the Wonthaggi Hospital expansion project. This investment will help the Bass Coast Shire community receive the same standard and access to healthcare as metropolitan communities and support a booming population.
The Wonthaggi Hospital expansion will build three new operating theatres plus a procedure room, a new emergency department with 18 additional treatment spaces, and a new 32-bed inpatient ward. This means staff will have the capacity to treat 26,000 extra emergency patients every year.
The Bass Coast Shire population is one of our fastest growing areas with population expected to more than double by 2031.
This project means more people can receive world-class healthcare – wherever they live.
The Wonthaggi Hospital expansion project aims to achieve the following benefits:
When complete, the hospital will have capacity to treat an extra 26,000 emergency patients each year.
Access to elective surgery, closer to home
The expansion project will double the number of operating theatres, enabling more procedures to be performed. This will also reduce the number of patient transfers to other hospitals, allowing patients to stay closer to home – and their families.
Improve quality of patient care
The expansion will provide new and refurbished facilities. Access to the facility will be improved, with fully compliant access for those with a disability.
The redevelopment will create up to 345 local jobs during construction.
