Casey Hospital is undergoing a $135 million expansion to increase the range and capacity of services it provides to one of Victoria’s fastest-growing regions.
This major expansion includes 128 new multi-day beds, 12 intensive care unit beds, 12 day surgical beds and four additional operating theatres. It will see Casey Hospital treat more than 25,800 extra patients, perform an extra 8,000 procedures and support an extra 1,300 births annually.
The expansion will allow Casey Hospital to meet the soaring demand for health care in Melbourne’s outer south east.

The Victorian Government committed $106.3 million in the 2015-16 Budget to expand the Casey Hospital. Then, recognising the unprecedented demand for health services in the area, the government committed an extra $28.61 million, bringing the total for this project to $134.91 million.
This major expansion of Casey Hospital will include the construction of a new clinical tower which will accommodate:
128 multiday inpatient beds
12-bed intensive care unit
four additional operating theatres, with two existing theatres being replaced by two new theatres designed to current standards
new central sterilising services unit.
Other works include:
12-bed day surgery unit
refurbishment and expansion works to pharmacy, pathology, back of house and kitchen facilities
dedicated teaching and training facilities (in partnership with Monash University)
additional generator backup capacity
expanded main entry with new café/retail area
333 additional car parking spaces (mix of public and staff).
The project is being delivered in four phases:
Stage 1 – new front entry building (including Monash University teaching space and café/retail area). This was completed in September 2018.
Stage 2 – new pharmacy including sterile manufacturing suite, pathology and upgraded kitchen. Due for completion in 2019.
Stage 3 – short stay unit, operating theatres and central sterile services unit. Completed in October 2019.
Stage 4 – clinical tower (includes 128 inpatient beds and 12 intensive care unit beds) is due for completion late 2019 and the 12-bed day surgery unit is scheduled to complete in early 2020.
This major expansion will enable Casey Hospital to treat more than 25,800 extra patients, perform 8,000 more procedures and support an extra 1,300 births each year. This helps to cut wait times and caters for increasing demand in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas.
Quality care, closer to home
Just as importantly, these services will be offered right in Melbourne’s outer south-east, which means people can be treated closer to home, without the need to transfer to other hospitals.
This also means less pressure on surrounding hospitals, such as Dandenong Hospital and Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, allowing them to better meet the needs of their local areas.
Investing in education
Monash University will provide dedicated teaching and learning facilities at the expanded Casey Hospital. The ‘Education Hub’ will help meet the expected increase in the number of medical, nursing and allied health student placement opportunities arising from the expansion.
Boosting local jobs
The project will also boost the local economy by creating up to 92 new jobs during construction and giving work to 21 apprentices, trainees and cadets.
Casey Hospital opened in 2004 as the result of a 25-year public-private partnership (PPP).
The Casey Hospital expansion project will be delivered within the existing PPP arrangement with Plenary Health, with the hospital still reverting to the State in 2029, as originally planned.
The Department of Health and Human Services, together with Monash Health, is also partnering with Monash University to create teaching and learning facilities at Casey Hospital. The Plenary Health consortium comprises Plenary Group, Watpac (as builder) and Brookfield GIS (as facilities manager).
