North West Metropolitan Youth Prevention and Recovery Care centre
The Victorian Government is investing $11.9 million to build a new 20-bed Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC) facility to support young Victorians experiencing mental illness.
This centre provides a community-based residential treatment option for youth 16-25 years who are becoming mentally unwell, or who are in the early stages of recovery from an acute mental illness and need a short period of additional support after leaving hospital.
This purpose-built facility will provide sub-acute mental health services in a home-like environment for youth in the inner west, mid-west, north west and south west areas of Melbourne.
To assist in the delivery of these services, the facility will include:
20 bedrooms with separate ensuites
clinical consulting areas
shared spaces including kitchen, dining, lounge, laundry and family / activity areas
This new purpose-built 20-bed facility will add to the service capacity in Victoria’s mental health system, enabling more young Victorians to receive the mental health services they require, faster.
This facility is expected to provide approximately 200 admissions per year.
Reducing hospital admissions and length of stay
Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC) services operate via a step up / step down model:
The step-up component is for young people whose mental health is deteriorating. This early intervention reduces the risk of escalation to an acute inpatient admission and minimises the harmful impact on individuals, their families and carers.
The step-down component is for young people in the early stages of recovery from an acute psychiatric episode. A short stay at a YPARC enables residents to strengthen and consolidate gains from their hospital admission before returning home.
Therapeutic design
Recognising that good design plays a significant role in the efficient delivery of high-quality health care, the facility will create a welcoming, therapeutic and supportive environment while supporting passive supervision of residents.
Coordinated, recovery-oriented treatment and support
YPARCs are designed to improve integration of youth orientated care and support services. This provides residents with a holistic treatment program in a supportive environment where they can establish their recovery plan and connect with services that can engage them in an ongoing manner.
This blend of clinical and non-clinical service offers a unique opportunity for recovery-focused treatment and support for young people and their families and carers.
